Outsidepride 1/4 lb. Nasturtium Climbing Vine Flower Seed Mix
Category: nasurtium seed
Revised Content:
Nasturtium (Tropaeolum Majus Jewel Mix) - Few flowers can match the vibrancy and beauty of nasturtiums in the garden. This lovely annual, grown from flower seeds, will reward you with a stunning display of blooms from June until the first frost. The Jewel Mix blossoms are 2-3 inches across and come in a captivating array of red, orange, and yellow shades.
The plant's rounded or shield-shaped leaves feature a central leaf stalk, adding to its visual appeal. What's more, the leaves, flowers, and seeds are all edible, with the leaves imparting a peppery flavor that can enhance your salads. In fact, the seeds were even used as a pepper substitute during World War II, or you can pickle them while they're still green.
Nasturtium vines thrive best when left to their own devices. They are adaptable to most soil types but prefer not to be fertilized, as excessive fertilization will produce lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Keep them watered, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Climbing nasturtiums make excellent companion plants for the vegetable garden, as their peppery-flavored leaves are said to deter many insects.
In cooler climates, these plants prefer a spot in full sun, while in the hottest regions, they benefit from some afternoon shade. Tropaeolum Majus plants will grow as annuals in any area, but they can only survive as perennials in frost-free zones.
Flower Specifications: Height: 14-16 inches USDA Zones: 3-10 Season: Annual
How to Grow: Plant the nasturtium seeds directly outdoors in the spring. The seedlings do not transplant well, so it's best to sow them directly in the garden. Before planting, soak the seeds overnight in warm water. The next day, plant them 1/2 inch deep in an area that receives at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. Ensure the soil is fine and light. The flowers will bloom 8-12 weeks after sowing.
Sowing Rate: 1-2 seeds per plant or 3.5 pounds per 1,000 square feet or 150 pounds per acre Average Germination Time: 7-10 days Moisture: Keep the seeds moist until germination Soil Type: Well-drained, pH 6.1-7.8 Plant Spacing: 8-12 inches
